Preparing and Sewing the Hearts blocks
Trace the heart shapes onto the paper side of the fusible webbing and cut out leaving approx 1/4in all around the edge. Iron these onto the wrong side of the yellow print fabric and cut out on the pencil line. Position the hearts onto the right side of the large cream squares and press in place. Do not be concerned if the hearts lift off during the sewing stage, simply repress. Sew the hearts in place using blanket stitch applique. Also read Helens article on the Hand Applique

Nine Patch Block Construction
Sew the block by sewing the squares into strips of blue/cream/blue, 8 required, press the seams towards the darker fabric cream/blue/cream, 4 required, press as above Then sew the strips together according to the coloured diagram. Press Repeat this process for the 4 small squares in the borders. Sew one of these blocks onto either end of two of the border strips. Set aside.

Sew the centre of the wall hanging together, by pinning and sewing 3 heart blocks to 3 nine patch blocks. Then sew another nine patch block onto the other side of one heart block. Sew a heart block onto the oposite side of the remaining nine patch/heart blocks. Carefully pin and sew these strips together.

Adding the borders. Pin and sew the two short border strips to the centre section and then add the two longer strips to the opposite sides. Press.

Mark with any desired quilting pattern. Layer the wallhanging top, wadding and backing fabric. Baste or pin together. Trim the excess wadding and backing fabric to 1in (2.5cm) outside the edge of the wallhanging.

Quilt as desired. Check that the corners are square and trim the wadding and backing to the edge of the wallhanging. Make a hanging sleeve from the left over backing fabric and pin in place with the raw edge of the sleeve in line with the edge of the hanging. The top edge of the sleeve will be sewn in place with the binding.

Prepare the binding by joining the three binding strips together, press the seams open. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong side together and press. Fold in a 1/4 in (6mm) seam allowance at one end and pin to the right side of the wallhanging beginning approx 4 in (10cm) from a corner. Pin and sew down the first side to 1/4in from the corner. Stop sewing and make a mitre turn, pin and sew to the next corner repeat the mitre corner. Continue around the hanging, trim away the excess binding fabric leaving 1/4in to overlap the beginning edge. Fold the binding to the back and sew in place with a fine slip stitch. Stitch the lower edge of the sleeve in place.
